1998 Ford Escort WON'T START?

I have a 1998 Ford Escort. The key will turn but NO sound whatsoever. The dome lights, the door chime, the stereo-NOTHING works. the only light that comes on is "service engine soon". You insert the key, put your foot on the break and try to pull the car into neutral and the shifter is stuck in park. The battery isn't dead. What could the problem be? THANKS in advance.
