What exactly was ed and al's mother in full metal alchemist?

I know she wasn't human (since their attempt to resurrect her failed), and even Ed said so himself in the first (or second? I forget) episode. I'd like to know what exactly she was, and I don't mind spoilers. ^^ Thanks!
